Outsourcing, Know Your Limits

Are you an entrepreneur who has been trying to do it all yourself to save yourself a little money? In today’s tough economy most of us feel like we are in the same boat. There’s just not enough time or money to get everything done. If that is not a problem for you, perhaps it is that you just don’t know how to do something that is critical to your ongoing success.

Are you a hands on entrepreneur? Do you attempt to learn every new technique that comes out? Maybe your issue is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or even knowing where to start putting together a website at all. Whatever your dilemma, at some point you either have or will begin to feel like you needed some direction or help. Are you taking too much time away from your ‘first love’ and not gaining ground. If so, take a step back and evaluate where you have come from and where you want to go.

So, how do you know when it is time to consider outsourcing? Outsource when you:

  1. Are frustrated
  2. Want it done better
  3. Need it done faster
  4. Want to take your business to the next level

There are definitely people out there that can ease your burden who have a whole lot of expertise in numerous studies. Perhaps you hate doing the tedious chores necessary to make your business thrive. Or could it be marketing as a whole that you deplore? Your time is better spent doing your key task of your business. When you are forced to do things you don’t enjoy you won’t do them well. Alternatively, when you have to learn something else that isn’t your main focus, you loose valuable time growing your business.

Let’s look at these reasons through the eyes of, say, a candle representative.

You are trying to learn how to design a graphic or create a video to add to your website but you just can’t get it together? After all, you sell candles. You love doing those house parties. But you have no clue where to begin or how to use the graphics or video editing software. Halfway through the project you begin to realize you can’t get things to work as easily as the ad said you could. You begin to get frustrated to the point you are ready to quit altogether. You know that your business could benefit if you could just get it done. Hire a videographer or graphic designer. They can most likely do the task efficiently and beautifully in less than half the time it took you to decide to seek help.

Did you see all the reasons that our candle rep would consider it time to outsource?

There graphic design, videographers, coaches and experts in SEO, marketing, blogging, and speaking, and there are also virtual assistants (Vas) that are eager and willing to help you. If you don’t know where to begin, ask a friend or trusted colleague if they know somebody that they would or are using.

Learning to delegate is part of the process of growing your business. A word of advice, don’t micromanage. Delegate and let them do their job. They know what it takes to get it done and your input, past the original delegation and instruction, will frustrate you and them. Even worse, it could make the end result your quality instead of a professional’s work.

Sales vs. Expertise

Used car salesmanGrowing as a business owner is imperative if your business is to survive. With new entrepreneurs appearing every day, your business’ success becomes harder and harder to maintain and grow. To stay on top of the pack you must learn the nuances of successful business ownership.

Pushy salespeople may get the sale but being an information provider will guarantee a long and prosperous business success. So how do you make the transition? Before you will ever convince anyone of your superior knowledge on a subject, you first must be wholly convinced within yourself that you are an expert.

As you begin to share your knowledge, others will begin to accept you for the expert that you are. The best way to begin is by sharing through offers. Do you have a white paper, ezine, eBook or some other informational product? If you offer to provide that resource in exchange for their contact information, you not only set yourself up as an expert but you additionally are able to begin list building.

Another idea is to offer free consultations. This allows you to answer the needs of those who ‘raise their hand’ to your product or service while proving your expertise. This is something that I have found to be successful in building both a multi-million dollar surgical facility and my online business as well. Be sure you are prepared to answer most of the questions that will arise before tapping into this business-building tool.

One word of warning, when you don’t know the answer be honest, tell them, “That is a very good question, I’ll have to check into it and get back with you.” Never, never, never give advice if you are unsure of what you are saying. It is better to complement the questioner and let them know you will get back to them than to be caught later having said something that turns out to be wrong.

Being a problem solver, information provider will ensure your business will continue to thrive and grow. These powerful techniques will build trust with your prospective customers and your contact list as well.

Is Your Life in Focus?

Recently I watched The “Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch. (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3115188410730134929) If you haven’t seen it you should take the time to do that. This video had such an impact on me that I woke the next morning thinking, “What am I living for?” Am I living for yesterday, today or am I focused on my tomorrows?

We have all heard the saying “Live for today, for tomorrow you die.” I say, “Live for tomorrow, for today you could die.” The difference is that when you focus on tomorrow you accomplish much. What will you leave behind? Will you leave a legacy or are you selfishly living for your own gratification with no thought of tomorrow?

I must finish by noting a line from the video, “I did have a deathbed conversion, I just bought a Macintosh.” I know there are some who will giggle with me here. This line is for you.

Repetition Blindness

The other day while searching for an unrelated file I ran across an article with this title that I had written long ago. It was all about editing and why you should have someone else do at least your final look see before calling any piece done. Seeing that, got me to thinking.

How blinded are we in other areas of our lives? As days evolve into weeks and weeks into months and … well you get the picture, what are we doing so habitually that keeps us from seeing how to break out of the cycle? What are we missing? Are we blinded by our habits or are we such creatures of them that we miss opportunities that could spur us on to new heights?

Mother’s Day Wisdom

Yesterday, being Mother’s Day I enjoyed a sermon by my pastor’s wife. Her words so impressed me that I felt led to share my notes here with you. It seems that as a teacher she relies on props to help her in her presentation and this was no exception. She chose to utilize clay and its many forms and properties.

She explained that there are three types of clay, which was news to me. The first is the kind we all enjoy as a child. It requires no water, is plyable once warmed by the touch of human hand, and impressionable but never takes a permanent form. The second is also requires no water, is plyable, and impressionable, however once it is is formed and dries it is what it is. During this process it is crumbly and can be hard to contain. The third clay is known as Potter’s Clay. This is the clay that is spoken of so often in the Bible that it is worth noting it’s properties.

Potter’s Clay is the only clay that requires water. Unlike the other two types of clay it requires a very unique synergy with it’s maker. With the addition of water, (could this be baptism?), it slips and slides in the potter’s loving hands. This is the only clay that requires extreem heat to ensure its form remains. While in the kiln if the form has not been perfectly formed as the imperfections bubble to the surface it will develop cracks and chips.

Now consider the clay. Do you think it is fun to be beat, twisted, torn, and forced into shape? At least with the Potter’s Clay it is loving hands that carefully form you. Which would you rather be? Even if you end up being chipped and cracked do you not think that you could be useful?

There is a wonderful book that was writen entitled, “God Uses Cracked Pots” by Patsy Clairmont. You don’t have to stay broken to the point that you are useless. It is through our cracks and chips that God makes good use of us.

As a final thought I would like to share a quote with you. “Leaving a good impression is intentional, not unintentional.”
